What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a totally safe and natural state of focused attention, often accompanied by deep relaxation.

We all experience light states of hypnosis several times a day, often without realising it.  It's that feeling you get while driving, when you realise that you have passed traffic lights and junctions without recall of parts of the journey.  It's the times when you are so engrossed in a movie, book or your phone that it takes several attempts before you realise that someone is talking to you.

In 1955 the British Medical Association recognised the effectiveness of hypnosis as a therapeutic tool; however, there is evidence to suggest that hypnosis has been used for thousands of years.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is simply a therapeutic technique that uses hypnosis to facilitate positive change in individuals.

During a hypnotherapy session, a trained practitioner guides the individual into a relaxed state of focused concentration, allowing them to access their subconscious mind, where transformative suggestions can be made.

One common approach within hypnotherapy is suggestion therapy, which involves delivering positive affirmations and suggestions while the client is in a hypnotic state. This method aims to help the individual to create new positive beliefs to alter or improve existing negative ones that may be holding them back. For instance, it can help you to change unwanted habits, improve sports performance or improve confidence, to mention just a few.

Another key technique used in clinical hypnotherapy is hypnoanalysis, which safely delves deeper into the subconscious to uncover the root cause of problems that may have troubled you for your whole life. This process involves exploring past experiences and unresolved issues that may be contributing to present difficulties. By addressing these root causes through hypnoanalysis, clients can achieve lasting change and improved well-being.  The effects of this therapy can be profound in resolving symptoms relating to psychological or emotional content.

The Conscious & Subconscious Mind

The conscious mind serves as the decision-making centre, responsible for our active thoughts, logic, and reasoning. It enables us to process information, make plans, and engage in critical thinking. In the realm of clinical hypnotherapy, the conscious mind plays a crucial role in setting intentions and goals for therapy. During sessions, clients are aware of the suggestions made, allowing them to actively participate in their journey of change, and engage with the therapeutic process.

In contrast, the subconscious mind operates beneath the surface of conscious awareness, governing our automatic behaviours, emotions, and deeply ingrained beliefs. It stores our memories and experiences, shaping our perceptions of the world. In clinical hypnotherapy, accessing the subconscious mind allows for transformative change, as therapists can help clients reframe negative thought patterns or resolve inner conflicts, ultimately facilitating emotional healing and personal growth.

Emotional Freedom Technique

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), often referred to as "tapping," is a powerful complementary therapy that combines elements of traditional therapeutic practices with acupressure. It involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while voicing thoughts and feelings associated with emotional distress or intentional goals. In the context of clinical hypnotherapy, EFT serves as a useful adjunct, allowing clients to access and process deep-seated emotions that may hinder their wellbeing or performance. By addressing the root causes of emotional challenges, clients can achieve a state of clarity and freedom from inhibiting emotions in a specific context.

The benefits of Emotional Freedom Technique for clients are manifold. Not only does it help alleviate anxiety and trauma, but it also promotes improved performance and resilience. Through the process of tapping and focused intention, clients can effectively clear emotional blockages, enabling them to embrace positive changes in their lives. Integrating EFT within clinical hypnotherapy enhances the therapeutic experience, providing a holistic approach to emotional and psychological challenges, whilst empowering clients to take control of their mental health journey.

Neuro Linguistic Programming

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a structured approach to communication, personal development and psychotherapy that was developed in the 1970s. It is based on the premise that there is a connection between neurological processes, language, and behavioural patterns learned through experience. By understanding and restructuring these patterns, individuals can alter their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours to achieve desired outcomes. In the context of clinical hypnotherapy, NLP techniques can be effectively integrated to enhance therapeutic outcomes, enabling clients to break free from limiting beliefs and achieve meaningful change.

The benefits of NLP are varied and profound. By utilising NLP techniques such as reframing and anchoring, therapists can help clients access their inner resources and skills, for the efficient reprogramming of unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours. Ultimately, NLP empowers individuals to take charge of their mental and emotional well-being, fostering resilience and promoting lasting personal transformation.
