Frequently Asked Questions
How is hypnotherapy different to other types of therapy?
Hypnotherapy is different from any other therapy because hypnotherapy uses the power of the subconscious mind to find solutions to the concerns or challenges that the individual would like support in addressing.
The subconscious is our creative, imaginative mind and it is responsible for keeping us safe and protected from harm. By using hypnosis, the conscious critical faculty (the gatekeeper to the subconscious) is bypassed, allowing the client to use their powerful imagination, and more readily accept suggestions, to bring about effective and long-lasting change. This can significantly improve quality of life.
Other therapies support individuals though use of the conscious mind, which is our logical thinking, rationalising mind. They often do not address the root cause of the issue, meaning in some cases, the beneficial effects can be short-term.
What happens during the first session?
The aim of the first hypnotherapy session is to put you at ease, making you feel respected, comfortable and safe. It begins with a thorough discussion of your concerns, goals and background. Taking a history in this way enables me to tailor your therapy, using techniques that ensure the best therapeutic outcomes for your specific needs.
I will explain the hypnotherapy process and answer any questions, or dispel any misconceptions, that you may have.
If time allows, you will be guided into hypnosis but only if you are ready and willing. I would guide you into a relaxed state through various techniques, such as progressive muscle relaxation, or monoideism. Once in a state of hypnosis, I may use techniques such as suggestion and hypnoanalysis to support you with your area of concern. At the end of the session, you will be counted out of hypnosis and have the opportunity to share any further thoughts, and ask questions.
Do you offer virtual sessions?
Yes, sessions can be in person or held virtually online.
Can you control me?
No, I cannot make you do anything that does not fit with your moral compass. If it is not something that you would want to do, you just won’t do it – you are completely in control.
Can you get trapped in hypnosis?
No, if at any time you would like to come out of hypnosis, you can simply open your eyes and you will be out of hypnosis.
Will I remember what I have told you and what you have said to me?
Yes, you are conscious throughout hypnosis, so will be able to recall what each of us has said.
Will I tell you things that I don’t want to tell you?
No, you are in control, so will only tell me the things that you want to. I cannot make you tell me anything that you do not want to.
Is there a hypnotic feeling?
Everyone's experience is different. Some people say that they just feel like they are sat with their eyes closed, while others say that they feel their eyelids twitching, feel a tingling sensation, or feel like their hands feel heavy or larger than normal. These are not unpleasant feelings, just different to normal.
Can you make me cluck like a chicken?
If you wanted to, but that’s not the nature of clinical hypnosis. The purpose is to support you in bringing about the changes that you desire.
